subject: Why Dvd Rental Is Popular In Hospitals [print this page]

Why should it be that DVDs are newly popular in hospitals?

It's because they're proving to be a success in operating theatres.

At Garnavel Hospital patients opt to watch a DVD during their op rather than going under a general anaesthetic. The trial one of the first of its kind in the UK was the brainchild of Dr Nick Pace who came up with his idea after chatting to friends.

They told Dr Pace that to distract their children during a long car journey they would put on a DVD strapped to the back of the headrests, keeping the children occupied for most of the journey.

Recent trials using music to distract patients under a local anaesthetic had mixed results so, after speaking to the engineering department at the hospital, the mount was made to allow DVDs to be played in the operating theatre.

Patients are now given the option to watch a DVD and have a local anaesthetic during the op rather than being put to sleep.

Why should this make dvd rental particularly popular however?

Well, although this option has been made available to patients for 18 months with an estimated 50 percent opting for the DVD option Dr Pace claims as yet no one watching DVDs has to be put to sleep because they became too fidgety and distracted.

They might though if they don't enjoy any of Dr Pace's DVD collection.

BBC documentary Blue Planet is not the only the DVD on offer with classics such as Only Fools and Horses and apparently a male favourite The Guide Successful Pole Fishing.

The DVD rental free trials initial success is positive news for those who believe that patients make a quicker recovery after receiving a local anaesthetic but whilst this is positive news the UK is still behind pioneering Scandinavian countries where 95 percent of patients opting for an operation under general anaesthetic combined with a distraction.

It remains to be seen if Dr Pace's DVD theory will be rolled out across the country but the next time someone you know goes in for a small operation remind them to take their favourite DVD with them.

If the idea really take off it is hoped that some of the big online DVD rental companies such as Lovefilm will start delivering to hospital beds.

In any case this looks to be good news both for DVD rental and for patients - who generally recover quicker and with less complications when they're only placed under a general aesthetic.
