It was the first truly India made SUV, as the vehicle was designed, developed and manufactured in the country. Safari was first introduced in 1998. It was first launched with a 1.9-litre Turbo Diesel engine. The SUV is known for its off-road capabilities.
Tata Safari has gone through lots of changes over the years. The SUV went through an extensive change in August 2005, when a new 3-litre DiCOR engine along with modified interiors and exteriors was introduced. The new 3-litre engine Safari won the Motor Forum's Car of the Year for 2007 in the SUV category, beating rivals like Honda CRV, Toyota RAV 4 and Land Rover Freelander.
Tata Motors introduced 2.2-litre Safari DiCOR with increased power output of 143 PS (105 KW) in October 2007. Later an advanced DiCOR 2.2 vtt engine was introduced. It had a power output of 140 PS (103 kW) at 4000 rpm and a torque output of 320 Nm at 1700 rpm. Recently Tata Motors has launched a new variant of the SUV branded as Safari GX. The GX is available with various features like dual tone exteriors, the internal rear view mirror and unique leather cum fabric upholstery.
The first generation of Tata Safari was launched in Turbo Diesel form with 87 PS (64 kW) power. It was equipped with a synchromesh forward five-speed gearbox also. The second generation of Safari known as Tata Safari DiCOR was equipped with a 3000 cc inline-four cylinder engine, offering 116 PS (85 kW) at 3000 rpm and 300 Nm (221 ftlbf) of torque.
