subject: The Seven Most Common Ferret Colors [print this page] All ferrets are typically grouped according to their coloring. Ferret colors are varied based on the color of the guard-hairs and undercoat.
Black ferret guard-hairs are black while his undercoat is either white or has a light golden tone to it. His eyes are black or as close to black as possible. The cute little ferret nose is also black. On occasion, the nose of the black ferret will be a speckled black.
Be sure not to confuse the black ferret, described above with the Black Sable. The black sable may appear to be black, but upon closer examination, you will realize that he is actually a very dark brown. He has a white or cream colored undercoat. His eyes are also a very deep dark brown, almost black. This ferret's nose is also black. But you may encounter some black sable ferrets with a marbled, blackish brown nose.
Chocolate. This ferret is described as chocolate because his fur is that delicious shade of brown. The coloring is similar to the black sable. The undercoat has either a golden cast or its white. Most chocolate ferrets have brown eyes, but you may see one here and there who has dark burgundy eyes. The nose is usually a light pink. Although, on occasion, may have a beige or brick colored nose.
Champagne. Think diluted chocolate. This particular ferret can be light to medium tan and as dark as a "diluted chocolate" say the experts. The undercoat can be white to cream colored. The eyes can range from a light color to a dark burgundy. The nose is usually pink.
Cinnamon. The coat is an beautiful shade of light reddish brown. The undercoat is either white or has a golden cast to it. The eyes of this little guy are light to medium burgundy. The nose is usually pink although, you may sometimes find this variety of ferret to have a nose as dark as beige with a brick colored "T" outline. Many experts will tell you that the true red cinnamon ferrets do not even exist today!
Albino. The albino ferret, just like an albino in any other species, lacks any pigment in his skin or his eyes. This type of ferret may range from a creamy white to a snow-white color both on the guard-hairs themselves as well as the undercoat. Every albino also has light to medium pink eyes. And every albino ferret has a pink nose.
DEW -- Dark-eyed white. This ferret, in many ways, resembles the albino. He has either a white or cream colored coat and a pink nose. But instead of the pink eyes of the albino ferret, this one has dark burgundy eyes. The DEW pattern of this animal possesses 10 percent -- and in some cases less -- guard-hairs in the form of a stripe, colored tail spots or sprinkled throughout the coat itself. Unfortunately, this variety tends to be prone to deafness, a result of the Woardensburg Syndrome. This is the same syndrome which causes deafness in white long-haired cats with at least one blue eye.
