MRT is a popular public transport among Singaporean . It is the main function in Singapore . It connects the entire city-state . It consumes less time than roaming in Singapore by bus. It has totally 79 stations and 78 stations are in operation . It operates from morning 5:30 till 1 am every day . I am here to share more details about MRT here.

The different Lines :

You can explore the entire Singapore through the 4 lines of MRT . There are underground MRT stations also functioning . They are tough enough to tolerate bomb attacks and they help as a bomb shelters.

The 4 lines can be described in different colors . They are North South Line (red), East West Line (green), North East Line (purple) and Circle Line (yellow).

North South Line: (NS)

It was the initial MRT line in Singapore. The line operates around 25 stations at present . It is totally 44 km long and administered by SMRT Corporation. This line is represented in red color on the rail map . this line joins the central Singapore to both northern part and the southern parts of this lovely country . Therefore, it has named as "North South Line".

The {first | primary | initial | starting line was established between Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh in 7th November 1987 . It goes through City Hall, Marina Bay, Yishun, Jurong East and Choa Chu Kang.

East West Line: (EW)

It has constructed after NS line in Singapore. It has 31 stations and takes care by SMRT corporation. It extends around 49.2 km long. It is colored in green on the rail map. It has been constructed on the Dec 12th of 1987 . The first line was from City Hall to Outram Park. It binds the central Singapore to both the western and eastern parts of the island. Hence, it was called as "East West Line".

The prior system contains City Hall, Outram Park, Clementi, Lake Side, Tanah Merah, Paris Ris, Jurong East, Choa Chu Kang and Boon Lay. Now it has got the 2nd phase of development where the line extends to Expo, Dover, Changi Airport and Joo Koon.

North East Line : (NEL)

North East Line is the third line established in Singapore. It has 16 junctions and monitored by SBS transit. Also it is the world's 2nd highest fully underground line . It has inaugurated on 20th June 2003. It is automatic and functions without driver. This line has the length of 20 km. This line has marked in purple on the railway map.

It binds the central Singapore to the north-eastern part of the Island.

Circle Line: (CCL)

It is the orbital line running through all the radial lines. It runs through the whole central area of Singapore. CCL is the fourth MRT line in Singapore. It has 31 junctions and 35.7 km long. It has monitored by SMRT corporation. It is the world's longest fully automatic metro line. It is marked in yellow on the rail map.

It has inaugurated on May 28th, 2009 from Bartley to Marymount.

Expansion of the Network:

MRT system relied on the North South Line and East West Line for more than a decade. Plans for the extension of these lines are presently under construction. Its expected daily ridership in 2020 would have grown to 4.6 million from the current count of 1.4 million passengers . The construction will bring the MRT network to 278 km by 2020.

The government designed a railway network of 540 kilometers by 2050 which will be more wide spread than London's 408 km tube system.

The extension of CCL is also under construction. The 6th stage construction is in progress . It will extend to Marian Bay by 2012.

The innovative projects of Downtown Line, Thomson Line and Eastern Region Line are in growth. They suppose to be fulfilled by 2013, 2018 and 2020 correspondingly.

Also there are many extensions of the existing lines have considered and the works are in growth.

MRT is quicker than any transport systems in Singapore. So it's become trendy and it acquires around 1.952 million ridership every day . It is a world class land transport system . Journey planning has increased among people because of MRT.
