subject: Obama Scholarships: Is College In Your Future? [print this page]

It's widely accepted that education is important to having a successful future. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. Grants and scholarships are just the beginning of efforts to try to make over higher education.

For decades, college prices have steadily increased. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. Single moms are especially affected in a bad way. Educating women and single moms is important to increase the workforce and help provide for children and families. The President has attempted to help by encouraging more grants for single mothers to attend school. There is no difference between Federal Pell Grants and Obama grants. The name "Obama grants" came as a result of the President's emphasis on educating moms. In the 2009-2010 school year, students could get a grant of up to $5,350. For mothers and other students, this is increase of available money is valuable help. The scholarship money covers practically all school-related expenses.

There's also another great program: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. With this tax program, the first $4,000 of community college or university expenses are free. The $4,000 grant is especially great for low-income students. A grant and a tax break could be just the thing to help students like working single moms. There are plenty of options on where, when and what a student can study. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school.

Making more efforts to improve education opportunities is the best way for President Obama to show that he values them. The stimulus plan that passed has some provisions to make the college loan process easier. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. There is also emphasis on encouraging more students to consider community college. At a community college students can gain important knowledge as well as save money.

In 2007 Obama stated, "We need to put a college education within reach of every American. That's the best investment we can make in our future." With the measures he has taken to this point, the President has demonstrated he means his words. The mission to educate all Americans is certainly helped by providing scholarships for mothers. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
