It's a bit intimidating from a technical standpoint at first but, once one actually makes the attempt, this process reveals itself to be very easy and quite intuitive. Best of all, these programs can create multiple virtual drives which allows many images to be mounted.
ISO files are usually burned to a CD-ROM for storage and general use. In fact, this format is essentially designed to allow for the easy transfer of a CD online, with all the contents in the original file structure found on the original. This requires a third-party burning software specifically built for the task. Using the included burning interface in an operating system will not burn an ISO image correctly to a disc. It will copy the files, but any information used at boot or other information that is to be handled in a specific manner by the computer will fail to operate as intended.
Programs for handling ISO files are generally free. Some of them work right from a newsreader's interface and some of them function as separate add-ons. Files which include multi-track data such as video and audio CD's cannot be stored or transferred in this manner. Most often, this file type is used for transferring entire programs which need to be installed or run from a physical CD. A mounted image can take the place of that physical CD during regular operation but, for CD's that need to run at boot, one must physically burn the image to a CD-ROM.
