subject: Fixing Leaking Taps In Sydney [print this page]

Is there anything worse than a leaking tap? No doubt youve experienced one either late at night or early in the morning. That constant drip, drip drip is enough to drive anyone crazy. Not only is it extremely annoying but its a terrible waste of water. Sure your tap alone might only drip a litre or so per day but imagine that happening to millions of homes across the world. That water really adds up and can lead to large amount of water wastage simply going down the drain.

Especially in a place like Sydney, where our water is very precious. We are already running low so its important to conserve as much as possible. Australia is a particularly dry place to saving as much water as we can is of the utmost importance.

Thats why its a good idea to get onto a leaking tap quickly and fix it up good. If a tap is leaking its usually one of 2 things. Either the washer is gone and needs replacing or the tap fitting itself is faulty and needs repairs. Before you do anything its important to turn off your water main. If you don't do this it can result in water spraying everywhere and causing you much more damage than a leaking tap might.

Once you turn off the water main you need to remove the tap. To do this youll need a spanner and a bit of elbow grease. Remove the tap and observe wether or not any parts of broken or corroded. The washer will be obvious as the seal will usually be cracked and need replacing. If this is the case youre in luck as washer only cost a few cents and can be easily replaced at any local hardware store. If its the tap though thats another story.

You can try your luck at the local hardware store and see if they sell taps that match your existing one. If not you might need to get a plumber out to your home to repair the broken tap to stop it leaking.
