subject: Monitoring Site Performance With The Right Metrics [print this page]

For us to precisely spot the trends and the correlations of the web, we need to look at metrics and graphs to understand it inside out. This is what we need to track and benchmark everyday when we follow daily traffic to the website.

Valuable insights with regards to website monitoring and checking on the website performance needs to be bench marked and tracked by monitoring daily. But would this all be enough? In the world of intense competition, we need access to a diverse set of data. For us to establish baselines and to get better each day with the help of data and analysis.

In case something goes wrong, with out baselines and benchmarks set, we will be able to see the changes that have occurred. For example, If we are hit with more traffic than usual, have these baselines make it easy for us to spot the increase or decrease in traffic and pin point to where and how this has happened. Trouble shooting also becomes a manageable task since we have noticeable correlations between the metrics and thus making it easier for us to trouble shoot a slow site.

Lets take an example here, If your site getting normal traffic but still the number of data base connections are on a high. The first feeling one gets is if there is a lot traffic to the site than usual. But if we consider looking at the database metrics, we indeed see that the database is actually slower than usual. This could be use to a disc input/output problem or may be due to a large indexing issue.

One of the best and the simplest ways to understanding a new architecture is to delve into it and study how the monitoring system works. A website performance monitoring system works more in the same fashion and in order to improve web performance it is mandatory to know how and study each and every aspect to get a great performing site.
