subject: Are You Gonna Take That: Cell Phones And Morals [print this page]

Like the ordinary guy who reports to the boss, schedules a dinner with the girlfriend, and allot some time with friends, I use my cell phones all the time. It keeps me informed and updated about almost everything I want to know. After I got a cheap cell phone deal with cheap cell phone carriers, everything was good to go and man was it kicking.

Im a guy from a conservative household. I always practice what my old folks advices on the proper use of cellular phones. Politeness and timing are everything with regards to talking to someone in front of me while my cell phone is ringing. When it comes to using my free wireless phones, I adhere to some necessary moral values. You dont have to be a prisoner of values like me to have the decency of answering a call.

I have always believed (beepers days applied) that cell phones are gadgets that have places on earth. Even though you are the busiest CEO in the world, refrain from using your phone inside the movie theaters. You are ruining my day and your eight year-old daughter who rarely see you watching her favorite Disney movies. Of course, you can take the cell phone with you for emergency purposes but dont let it sound, not even on vibrate mode. Spending time reconnecting to your love ones goes first over reconnecting the lines to your boss. Just step outside, answer the phone, and politely offer a call back. After that, bribe your daughter a wireless market plus visit for either a new Blackberry or a cheap cell phone upgrade.

When you answer your phone, excuse yourself from the person you are currently talking with. But dont just say the magic words, give a little foreplay. Move smoothly from how interesting their issue is to an unfortunate need of answering the phone. After that, have a well-bred manner of turning away as a respect to the person calling and to yourself as well.

Heres another thing I learned. When you answer your phone while talking to a mere friend or potential client, keep the conversation very short. Why? Its only logical that talking to someone of value to your social life and career life entail appreciation of their time. Just be a little emphatic. Imagine you are on the middle of talking about your failed marriage to your best friend when suddenly his phone rings and entertained another person on the other line. That is a mere reflection of a feeble-minded insensitivity.
