subject: Checking Your Brake Lines [print this page] If you don't have enough brake fluid your brakes will not be able to stop your vehicle. This article addresses how you can check your brake system to be sure you are not leaking any brake fluid. If you do have a leak, take it to a Utah brake repair shop.
Every 6 months you need to thoroughly check your vehicles systems, in particular your brakes. Specifically you are looking for leaks or potential leaks in your brake system. Take it to a Utah brake repair company without delay when you find a repair is needed.
In addition to the in depth checkup every 6 months it is recommended to perform a simple 3 minute check every week. During this check you want to verify that the tire pressure and fluid levels are at their proper amounts.
To check the brake fluid level most vehicles have a semi-transparent container which makes verifying the fluid level quick and easy. If it is dirty, take a rag and wipe the container so you can see it. It may also be helpful to bounce the vehicle to verify that you are looking at the brake fluid.
It is normal for your brake fluid level to drop as your brakes wear. If the brake fluid level drops below the minimum level add some DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid (look on your brake fluid reservoir cap for which one). If you frequently add brake fluid after previously adding fluid then you have a leak.
During the 6 month checkup develop a routine to inspect every system of your vehicle. If you have a hydraulic lift it may be easier to inspect by system. If you are able to only lift your vehicle a little off the ground inspecting by area may be better as moving around under a vehicle with little room may take some effort.
With your engine running open the hood. Do you notice anything that is unusual? How about vibrations, sounds, or smells? Do you see anything that looks like it may need to be replaced?
Next inspect the items under the vehicle. Be careful of the hot exhaust pipes. Look for any damaged or worn parts and have them replaced by your Utah brake repair facility.
