subject: How To Stop Smoking [print this page]

Quitting smoking is a very difficult challenge. Many smokers try to quit but fail. The reason smoking is so difficult to quit is because smoking is both physically and pyschologically addicting. Smokers looking to quit smoking must deal with both types of addiction in order to quit successfully. To quit smoking, planning is key. For smokers trying to stop smoking, here are a few tips:

1. Plan Ahead. Pick a date to quit. Talk to people who have kicked the habit. Find out what other former smokers have done to quit successfully. Before the quit date, it may be a good idea to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked each day. Analyze the times that you typically smoke. Try to figure what can be done in lieu of smoking during those times.

2. Get Support. You don't have to be alone in your smoking cessation efforts. There are many good telephone hotlines that offer free counseling. Tell your friends and family about desire to quit smoking. They can be a great source of support.

3. Learn to Change Habits. As mentioned, smoking is, in part, a psychological addiction. We are all creatures of habit. For instance, maybe, you are used to having a cigarette after you eat. Or maybe, you like to have a cigarette first thing in the morning. Try to find activities that you can substitute for smoking. Chew a piece of gum after you eat, rather than smoking a cigarette. Instead of having a cigarette first thing in the morning, go for a walk to get that boost of energy that a cigarette often provides.

4. If you need it, Purchase a Smoking Cessation Product. Quitting "cold turkey" can be difficult. The nicotine found in cigarettes is highly addictive. There are many good smoking cessation products on the market, like Nicodyne. Do some research. Find out what smoking cessation products could work for you.

5. Be persistant, even if you fail. Quitting smoking is difficult. If you slip up and have a cigarette, don't fret to much. The key to quitting is to never give up trying to quit. Good Luck.
