subject: Potential For Part Time Positions [print this page]

Maybe it was the recession or just a shift in priorities, but many Americans are considering the potential of working part time. In fact, many are opting for two part time roles instead of one more stressful full time position. A. Harrison Barnes, renowned career coach and founder of Hound.com, says its likely a combination of reasons that have led to the new direction in the job market. During the recession, many people could only find a part time job and have found a new niche that allows them more freedom and because were a nation thats spending far less these days, a lot of the financial stresses that were present even two years ago arent so overwhelming now. Not only that, says Barnes, but they feel a sense of loyalty to those employers who provided the opportunity to work, even if it was in a part time position. Because of that loyalty, many are opting to hold on to it and make up the difference in terms of salary via a second part time position.

But could there be another reason many of us are sticking to our part time delivery positions or on-call nursing positions? Maybe. There remain many unanswered questions on how exactly the health care overhaul will play out. Frankly, many Americans are just not at the point yet that they can afford health care. Couple this with the uncertainties of what it means in terms of health care, costs and even penalties for not participating, and it makes better sense for many of us to lay low, so to speak, until the wrinkles have been ironed out. Barnes says this is likely to remain a trend for the next eighteen months, at least. Its not that no one wants affordable health care, Americans just want to be sure Congress and the Obama Administration have the same ideas on what affordable means as do the working men and women.

So what are some of the other reasons many are opting for part time positions?

Many have seen the recession as the perfect opportunity to return to school. A. Harrison Barnes says many Americans were working a lot of hours in their efforts of saving to buy a home. When the real estate market crashed, many believed waiting was their best option and as a result, chose to better their long term career options by returning to school.

They enjoy the ability to work a couple part time positions versus a more stressful full time job with all the demands that come with it. The Hound.com founder says, This isnt a trend towards taking the easy way out, it is, however, a much needed break people are taking as they rethink their careers post-recession.

A part time position means more time to spend with family. Barnes says, The recession reminded all of us of one thing: we were spending more and more hours at the office which resulted in less time with the truly important things in our lives.
