subject: Why Public Relations Is Essential In Healthcare [print this page]

Public relations are an important part of the communications strategy of any business, whether for profit or non-profit and regardless of the industry that the business in question is in. Healthcare organizations are no exception to this rule and in fact, hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities and medical practitioners are among the largest consumers of public relations services. Any kind of medical services provider needs both internal and external communications - and needs to have the ability to speak clearly to both vendors, partners within the healthcare field as well as current and potential patients.

Image management is every bit as important for a hospital as it is for any other type of business concern; perhaps even more so for a healthcare organization than for a traditional for profit business such as a manufacturer or a retailer. In this industry, lives are quite literally at stake and the perception of the organization in the minds of the public as well as within the industry are crucial to the future of health care providers.

Some larger hospitals and HMOs may have their own PR departments in-house, while other healthcare providers choose to keep things simple on their end and outsource these kinds of tasks to a knowledgeable outside firm, either one which specializes in public relations or a full service agency. Depending on the precise needs of the organization, the decision of a traditional PR firm versus a creative agency with a larger range of communications capabilities may be a more or less suitable choice.

When many of us think about public relations, two different things come to mind: community outreach and crisis management. While both of these functions are indeed incredibly important parts of the larger PR picture, public relations are much broader than this relatively narrow definition. For instance, a great deal of what a public relations firm (or the PR department of a creative firm or in-house at a healthcare organization) does is similar to what a talented advertising or marketing firm does: keep their clients in the public eye in order to establish and maintain their corporate or brand identity.

Health care is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy in virtually every country around the world - and as such, there is a ever increasing demand for public relations firms and agencies with PR capabilities which have an in depth understanding of this field.

The aging population of most of the world's industrialized nations mean that healthcare PR is a field which is on the move, rapidly gaining importance not only in the creative and communications services sectors, but in the broader global economy as well.

People are beginning to look at healthcare much in the same way as they do other service industries, making it all the more important for PR firms to step up their efforts in the area of helping the health care industry communicate effectively with the public and amongst themselves.
