Ideally, you want several inches of padding between the cello and also the outside of the case. It's also wise to test the case with your personal instrument in order to assess how well it fits in case. The cello should fit snuggly into the padding without having any wiggle room and there should be sufficient Velcro straps or other support to guarantee the instrument doesn't move while being transported.
