subject: Understanding Remote Computer Desktop [print this page]

Remote Desktop is a tool that enables you to remotely take control of your computer from different location. Lets assume, you can access your workstation from home or while away.

Remote computer desktop can be very handy in the following situations:

1. Use Remote Desktop troubleshooting issues within an organization that may be in a remote location but are connected to the central network through a direct network connection, secure virtual private network (VPN), or remote access.

2. Use Remove Desktop within a network to remotely troubleshoot organizational computers.

3. To allow remote access to organizational computers without security concerns that unauthorized users are viewing the remote computers monitor and watching what actions are being performed remotely.

Remote Desktop can only be used for connecting internal domain computers. If the machine that you want to access is outside your organizations firewall, then you will require to use Internet proxy software or Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server client software.

If you want to have a session from a computer over the Internet to your companys intranet, you must first create a secure VPN connection to the internal network you wish to access.

You can't use Remote Desktop to create a connection between two machines directly connected to the Internet.

Once you connect a computer remotely, Windows will prompt the local user that they have to be logged off before the computer can be accessed remotely.

Remote Desktop VS Remote Assistance - There is one major difference between Remote Desktop and Remove Assistance, you can't offer help to others through Remote Desktop because when you connect to other's computer it will be locked automatically and other person will not be able to communicate with you.
