subject: A Professional Web Development Should Be A Memorable Experience For Visitors [print this page]

A website provides online customers with a valuable service. A successful online presence will clearly showcase company's products or services to visitors. You should make efforts to provide rich content which is enjoyable and memorable to your website visitors. It simply means, your website should provide a pleasant "experience" to online visitors. A positive and noteworthy experience should be created by design, content and marketing.

A small story to understand customer experience

In one of the popular European city, there is a Hot Dog shop, affectionately known to a few, as "The Dirty Hot Dogs". This title clearly distinguish it from a very similar nearby restaurant named "The Hot Dogs" which, "back in the day", served similar meals to upper middle class women, usually when they are not taking their children to the dentist, doctor, or baseball practice. The old version is, grimy, and well worn; the new restaurant version is nicely lit, and cleaner. The waitresses in the new restaurant are young, always chewing a gum, had pencils stuck behind their left ear and called everyone sweetly as "Gen." On the other hand in old restaurant if you just ask for an extra pad of butter or more cream for your coffee, you would most likely hear something very rude like, "Martina, listen to Mr. Hot Shot over here, he wants more butter. Does he know a good heart doctor...? You often hear some nasty words when she leaves your table murmuring under her breath.

The loyal patron businessmen who attended the shop were from old school, they are not an MBA. They survived from the depression and built successful businesses with no formal business education. You can consider it as the power of an "experience".

Consider a situation where too many websites are sterile, functionally redundant, and generally impersonal and lack any kind of meaningful experience for visitor. Business owners, who spend huge amount of time concerning them with driving consumer traffic to their Web site, often, discount what happens when shoppers arrive.

If your website provides unique experience to its online visitors, this is something which your competitor cannot steal from you. On the other hand, if all you provide your visitors simply commodity things then somebody else may produce the same commodity faster and cheaper. If this is the case then you will very likely find yourself eating at your own "The Dirty Hot Dogs"; not because you want to remind yourself of where you came from, but rather where you're going.
