subject: Roadmap of LTO tape technology extends to Eighth generation LTO-8 [print this page]

Public organizations, E-businesses, government agencies, financial organizations and SMBs are creating mountains of data. The future of these organizations depends on the integrity & availability of this information. LTO ultrium tape devices have proven to be the most intelligent and economical solution for the modern data rich applications.

A survey report was published by IDC (International Data Corporation) in 2008 with the title "The Diverse and Exploding Digital Universe". According to the findings of this report, by the year 2011, the volume of digital data is expected to increase by 10 times it was in 2006. IDC is the world's leading market researcher and analyst, which specializes in consumer technology, telecommunications and information technology. Such enormous data volume will require higher capacity storage mediums that can assure faster backup and archival with greater integrity.

LTO consortium carefully focuses on the current and future demands of its customers and backup industry. IBM, Quantum and HP are members of LTO consortium. Therefore in order to better serve the needs of its clients, LTO consortium has decided to further extend the roadmap of LTO tape generations. This is really great news for the users of LTO technology and those who are planning to adopt the industry leading LTO tape products.

Roadmap of LTO leads to the 8th generation with a clear vision for future storage demands. Two new generations including LTO-7 and LTO-8 have been introduced to the roadmap of LTO roadmap. The native capacity offering of LTO-8 and LTO-7 will be 12.8 TB and 6.4 TB respectively.

Data compression ratio of these new LTO tape generations has been enhanced from 2:1 to 2.5:1. According to this rate, the LTO-8 ultrium cartridge will hold 32 TB compressed data and LTO-7 ultrium tape with 16 TB. These are really massive storage capacities that will enable the organizations to handle the avalanche of enormous data volumes.

So far LTO consortium has released five LTO generations. High performance LTO tape technology efficiently addresses the cost control objectives and allows you to accommodate huge data volumes within lesser space. Few of the best selling LTO cartridges have been listed below:
