The cello teachers have adopted the "Suzuki method" of teaching which originated in Japan and requires a lot of parental involvement and can be taught to children as young as 3 to 4 years old.

It is not necessary though that one has to start young however there is a maturation stage in the learning process that might affect the progression. The cello musical instrument is not very difficult to learn.

The cello beginner lessons have many similarities with the violin lessons, but you will not find any marks on the fingerboard of the cello so finger placement can take some time to get right. You have to rely a lot on listening for the right notes. This will require a lot of patience from both teachers and parents.

As a start, you have to determine the reason why you want to learn to play a particular instrument. If you have a passion and a strong desire to learn the cello only then it is advisable to go ahead with it or else it will be a complete waste of time.

Once you've made up your mind to be a really good cellist then you have to set a realistic goal to aim for. Only frequent and regular practice will give you good results. The next step would be to search for a good and efficient teacher.

You can seek your parents help if required. Try and visit two or more teachers and see how they teach and then make up your mind as to whom to learn from seeing your own schedule and way of learning the instrument.

What should follow after this is to take steps to learn the basics and techniques of playing the cello. Note that rushing with the lessons might lead you to acquire the wrong techniques, so it is highly recommended to go slow and not develop bad habits. Wrong habits are very hard to correct if the person has acquired it for a long period of time already.

You want to stay clear of habits that may even lead to physical injuries. Slow but sure study will help you learn the right techniques.

Practice for short periods of time in the beginning, when you start feeling more comfortable with the instrument then you can gradually lengthen the practice time. Try and perform at school or the community center in order to gain performing experience.

Finally, a learner should concentrate to practice the scales and arpeggios properly as it will make him play the cello in the best manner.
