The traditional "seasonal flu" (non-H1N1 strains) is typically at its peak in Arizona each December through February.

According to Sheri English, NP, Cigna Medical Group, with careful, disciplined hygiene you can help keep everyone at their healthiest throughout the holiday season especially if out-of-town visitors bring the flu bug along.

Cigna Medical Group recommends these seven tips for stopping a virus from spreading among family members within the home:

1. Avoid close contact (within 6 feet) of anyone who has the flu. Sneezes and coughs can travel that far.

2. Keep the sick person in a room separate from common areas of the house. They should use a separate bathroom as much as possible.

3. Only one adult should care for the sick person. Pregnant women should not care for sick family members.

4. Use paper towels and paper napkins as much as possible. Avoid using cloth napkins at the table unless these are washed after every meal.

5. Maintain good ventilation in shared household areas (keep windows open when possible in kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms).

6. Use household cleaners with both a detergent and disinfectant. Viruses can live on hard surfaces for 2 hours or more (microwaves, faucets, doorknobs, etc).

7. Do not shake sheets or linens when removing them from the sick persons room. Clean your hands after handling soiled laundry.

Its equally important to receive a seasonal flu shot, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.

This is a separate shot from the H1N1 vaccine, and its most important for senior family members or anyone with a chronic condition to receive one.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes or congestive heart failure can make it harder for the body to fight off illnesses or can lead to more severe symptoms and complications.

Seasonal flu shots are available at Cigna Medical Group or CareToday locations for $26. These are available to anyone with or without CIGNA insurance.About the Author:
