subject: Delivering Medical Supplies Which Are Temperature Sensitive [print this page]

When you're shipping something that can be damaged by temperature there are some special considerations that you have to contend with. You don't want to ship something with a fulfillment company without being properly prepared for that shipping, otherwise the goods could become damaged if they are temperature sensitive. Some of the most commonly shipped items which are temperature sensitive are pharmaceutical products and other types of medical supplies.

When you're shipping these types of goods it is obviously important that they are protected in every way possible from becoming overheated and sustaining damage. When you're talking about shipping things like extremely expensive drugs or blood for transfusions, you have to realize that if those items become damaged people's lives can hang in the balance. That is why taking lots of care with all temperature sensitive shipments are critical.

This includes doing research into finding the best courier possible. You obviously need a courier that has the right kind of equipment to transport goods that need to remain cool over the length of the shipment. These refrigerated units are cooled in a variety of ways, and in order to transport medical goods a courier is going to need different types of these units and will also have to have certain permits in place. They should also have cooled storage in case the goods need to be stored before shipping.

Packaging of your medical materials is also important. Although they will be cooled when being transported, the goods are never going to be in the trailer at every moment of the shipment. The cargo will have to be both loaded on the trailer and unloaded later. If you pack the shipments in properly insulated containers you can be sure that the material doesn't become damaged when it is being transported between your location and the courier vehicle, or when the courier is making the final drop off.

Taking a little bit of time both researching your prospective couriers and in packing your shipments properly is well worth it. Without it, there is too large a chance that you're going to have substandard shipping conditions for those drugs or medical materials. Many people don't realize that some of those substances only require a very slight increase in internal temperature in order to cause damage or spoilage. As such, it is critical that every possible step be taken to make sure that nothing happens which will warm them in any way.
