subject: Floral Themes In The Breezeway [print this page]

Decorating a breezeway in a natural theme works particularly well, because as the area that connects the garage to the rest of the house, the breezeway is a wonderful place to add a transition from outdoors to indoors. Using a floral theme to decorate the breezeway does just that.

Flowers Bring the Beauty of Nature Indoors

Generally a breezeway is one of the most heavily traveled areas in the house. Many homeowners use the breezeway instead of their front or back doors. By incorporating flowers and plants into this space you are mixing the elements of nature and architecture to create a dynamic design. Since a breezeway generally has abundant natural lighting, usually light is not a problem. If it is though there are any number of viable solutions available on the market. When incorporating plants into your breezeway first identify plants that will thrive in your breezeway environment, and then determine which ones to use. Consider the lighting, temperature and humidity when finding which plants will do well in your environment.

Functional Floral Theme

You can use a floral theme to make your breezeway more functional. To do this, pick a singular theme to unify the space. For example, you may want to select a wrought iron hall tree to add height to your space, and at the base of the tree cascade plants for a pop of color. This way when you hang your dripping rain gear on the tree, the water will revive thirsty plants. Continue your design with wrought iron storage shelves where you can display a cascading spider plant on a higher shelf, and a climbing vine on a lower shelf.

Keep hats and gloves on the shelf to get out of the door quickly. Then add a bench in wrought iron or wood, to use when putting on boots and shoes. Wooden benches with built in storage make very effective use of this space. To complete the look, include some additional wrought iron and wooden plant stands, and choose lighting fixtures that compliment the floral design. Make sure that all overhead lighting is beneficial to the plants.

You can add interest to the ceiling and keep the air circulating by installing a ceiling fan. You can find one with leaf patterned blades or other floral patterns to put the final touch on the space.

To further the tranquil garden space that the flowers and plants add to the breezeway, add a water feature. It can be compact and mounted on the wall, or it can take up an entire corner of the room. Either way the relaxing sounds of its cascading water will greet everyone who enters your house through the breezeway.
