IPv4 cannot take all of the credit for this however. Just tapping a couple of numbers (such as, 196.18.223.14 which is typical class C address in CIDR notation) would not get us very far. It is very hard to consider just one item to be a superior and stand alone influence. IPv4 would be nothing had not the same great minds developed the TCP/IP protocol suite. Without TCP/IP it is arguable that modern networking and communications as we know them would be much more primal in nature. TCP/IP is a very complex set of rules and properties, theories and algorithms that allow "routing". All of this technology is interconnected and interdependent. Without one, none would exist.

I suppose the overall reason why I consider networking theory to be the greatest invention in the 21st century is the fact that without it, all other technological advances would have been delayed beyond imagination. According to BBG Communications, Networking theories and technologies have allowed wide area communication of data, ideas, technology, and so many great things. Not only is it easier than ever to instantly communicate with someone opposite the globe, but you can set up your own personal network and share an entire infrastructure with ease. Imagine the possibilities, that's right, the possibilities, networking is not a one time invention, it is an evolving invention. It is expanding with the latest and greatest theories and software. New technologies are allowing for previously theoretical capabilities to become reality. Networking was a theory to allow change, to allow growth. Growth that allows everything else to grow along with it. Almost everything today is created on a network, shared between peers, and eventually sent via digital communication to be manufactured.

Networking has allowed communications on a scale that most of us would not even begin to comprehend. There is nothing that can hinder something that is as massive as networking. It is everywhere. Without networking, the modern day technologies and lifestyles would cease to exist. It would be a technological ice age.
