There is more to getting fit than doing a bunch of exercise every once in a while. Everyone has thought "I want to be more healthy" and "I want to be in better shape" from time to time. In order to truly become more fit, you need to prepare yourself to commit fully to the health of your whole body (and spirit). You can't hope to get fit if you aren't prepared to do things like eating good food and making healthy lifestyle choices. Of course those topics can be discussed another time. There are just a few tips that you can use to start putting together your fitness routine.

Make healthy lifestyle choices. You should not smoke. Cut down on the alcohol. In addition to being terrible habits, smoking and drinking will only hinder your efforts to get fit and lead a healthier lifestyle. Smoking is terrible for your lungs and can keep you from being able to work out properly. Drinking is terrible for your level and lowers your energy levels.

Beyond the damage they do to your body, alcoholic drinks are jam packed with empty calories. You could spend your whole workout working off the calories you ingested with your booze. Why set yourself back?

Fat does not weigh as much as muscle. If your main goal is to lose weight it is important to remember this fact.

When you lead a healthy lifestyle your waist size might shrink but your weight might not. This happens because the fat cells shrink at the same time that your muscles get bigger and stronger. Take your measurements regularly as you work to get fit. You might discover that your weight stays about the same while your pants size drops a lot! You need to remember this so that you don't get discouraged while you work on getting fit.

Start with a simple routine and add to it over time to build something that is more complicated. Nobody is able to run ten miles when they first start working out. Nobody is able to lift a hundred pounds if they haven't ever done weight lifting before. Start with slow and easy exercises and then work up to routines that are more involved. When you try to do too much too fast you will most likely end up injured. If you push yourself too hard too soon you will hurt yourself. Talk to a physical trainer or your doctor (or even a good physical therapist) when you need help putting together your workout routine.

Nothing in your life is untouched when it comes to fitness. Getting fit involves far more than a sporadic exercise routine. Fitness encompasses a nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle choices as well as regular workouts. You have lots of options when it comes to finding success at fitness. Just remember: there is more to fitness than exercise.
