Who Is The "Strange Woman" of Proverbs 5:3?

So Who Is The "Strange Woman" of Proverbs 5:3?

Recall the haunting words of Proverbs 5:3-5: "For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell."

Now it is natural to see this strange woman as merely flesh and blood-but this would be only the most base reading of the passage. A valid reading to be sure, but a far cry from the most grand intentions of the author.

You see, when you step back and read these verses within the full context of Scripture, specifically within the context of Proverbs chapters 3, 4 and 5, only then will you begin to see the full power of the presentation.

The poetic expression here shared in Proverbs chapters 3, 4 and 5 present the "way of life" portrayed against the opposite of such a life well lived-the way of destruction and ruin. (read these 3 chapters after this blog to see what I mean)

For instance, you'll see how the author recognizes the simple beauty of a man married to one woman; a man who even enjoys the wife of his youth all his days (what a wonderful physical example of a life well lived!).

Then, to take you to an even higher plane, you'll see the author using this example as but a means to unfold his deeper meaning-that is the way of life bound up in the Wisdom of Jesus Christ (imagine the magnificent splendor of the man who enjoys the God of his youth all his days!).

And this he then uses to portray, against this way of life, those adulterous men who leave their creator God and engage their mind with all the filth of philosophies and activities far beneath the heroic call of God unto all men (and Peter portrays this well when he speaks of the dog and his vomit and the pig and his slop).

In other words, for those whose nature is born of God and have within their very being the living Creator, how could they ever build their world around anything but the wisdom of Scripture.

And how plain should it not be to you when you see the whorish lives of those who have left this natural state to wallow in the mud (think of the flood-also nicely used by Peter) of destruction and ruin (do not be fooled, God has indeed personally called ALL men unto life-there remains no excuse for the wicked!).

I see this as the intention of the Word of God regarding that strange woman of Proverbs 5:3-she (both physically and spiritually) is strange to you and I because our natural state is within the commonwealth of the Kingdom of God.

Let me know if this helps... :)
