subject: Did Elisabeth Hasselbeck Get Liposuction? [print this page]

Anytime a celebrity suddenly gets looking a lot better, people start wondering whether or not they got cosmetic surgery. So it is with the controversial talk show host Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Hasselbeck, a co-host on the morning television show "The View," recently bounced back extraordinarily well and quickly from a pregnancy. This has gotten people wondering whether or not she had a little help from a "mommy makeover."

"Mommy makeover" is the nickname that people have given to a package of cosmetic procedures designed to help women to reach (or exceed) their pre-pregnancy figures after they give birth. It typically includes includes an abdominoplasty (also referred to as a tummy tuck), liposuction (also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy), and it sometimes includes a breast lift.

Lipoplasty removes excess fat from a person's body. When performed in a mommy makeover, it can be done in a number of places. The abdomen is one of the most common target areas. During the surgery, a person is anesthetized, small incisions are made in the target area's skin, and a special instrument called a cannula is inserted. A cannula is a thin, hollow needle which can be attached to a vacuum device. After inserting the cannula, the doctor moves it back and forth through the fatty tissue of the target area, breaking up and suctioning out the unwanted fat.

A tummy tuck works by removing excess skin and tissue from a woman's stomach. Frequently, women experience that their skin stretches out during periods of obesity or during pregnancy. Lipoplasty cannot remove excess skin, only fat. In these cases, a tummy tuck can help by removing the excess skin. It can also help in cases where a woman's abdominal muscles have become too stretched out and loose due to the pressures of pregnancy. In these cases, doctors will sometimes reattach and tighten a woman's abdominal muscles during a tummy tuck. This surgery typically leaves a large scar somewhere across a woman's midriff, and it can sometimes lead to complications such as back pain.

A breast lift is a surgical procedure which is designed to remove droop and restore a youthful appearance to the breast.

Although some are suspicious of Hasselbeck, at least one prominent plastic surgeon disagrees: "Elisabeth Hasselbeck seems to be one of those mommies that just bounces back like a rubber band after childbirth... I think she likely did not undergo [a mommy makeover] given their downtime, and simply works extremely hard on her body as it has been reported that she exercises right up to the birth of her children."
