I believe I'm one of the first in Thailand who were exposed to BlackBerry experience, back in 2006. Four years have passed and the landscape of smart phones in general and BlackBerry in particular has since changed dramatically. Gone are the days of ungainly BlackBerry handsets connected mainly to enterprise email servers. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 white model is now available on Rogers. Both Best Buy and Future Shop have the Black Berry Bold 9700. You can buy the Blackberry Bold 9700 white model for Best Buy without contract with a 3-year contract. As of this writing, the Rogers website does not have the BlackBerry Bold 700 white model up on their site. Specs of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 white mode include BlackBerry OS, full QWERTY keyboard, 256 MB RAM, MicroSD slot, 480 x 360 resolution, and up to 6 hours talk time. Despite my impression of speed of email delivery and long battery life, I was turned off by all these impracticalities and lack of sexiness the model offered. So I placed the unit in my bedside drawer and went back to Windows Mobile Pocket PC for more than two years, until the needs of business life required that I reassess the situation. This article is not designed to be the review of BlackBerry Bold 9700 andBlackBerry 9000 that I finally decided to purchase. It's rather an observation of the changes I've witnessed, a point of view from a BlackBerry user who had decided to stop using it and then come back. The article is also intended to address folks who somehow are thinking about buying a BlackBerry simply to differentiate themselves from iPhone users. To make a long story short, the company's IT people needed to help me set up so that both the company's email accounts worked on the device. Even then, it's still not possible to sync my personal calendar data on my home PC via Outlook to the unit because the handset is set up to sync Calendar on Lotus Note wirelessly to the BES. I cannot simply use BlackBerry's Desktop Manager to perform cable-syncing on an ad hoc basis. Setting up my personal POP3 email accounts and Gmail account is a breeze, fortunately. After using the device for a couple of weeks, I can testify that my BlackBerry experience has been greatly enhanced. The nice screen display is comparable to other high-ended smart phones. Thai language is now a natural part of the game as well. What makes this Blackberry 9700 really stand out is the way it manages messages. All incoming emails and Facebook and Twitter updates are converged into one area easily accessible via the icon bar at the bottom of the screen. With such an arrangement, plus the ability to interact with Facebook, Twitter, Instant Messaging and PIN chatting, BlackBerry now gives you the world of emailing and social networking wherever you go.
