subject: Catered chalets the best of both worlds [print this page]

It's one of the great debates before every holiday - do you go for a hotel where you can be waited on, hand and foot? Or do you go for the self-catering option where you have the freedom to do what you want when you want and get the extra space that apartments or chalets offer?

Many families, for instance, find that the cost of a hotel and the lack of space for children to play or teenagers to get away from adults can be very restrictive. On the other hand, a stay in chalets, villas and apartments can be just a busman's holiday for mum.

This is where catered chalets can come in. They offer the space and the freedom of an apartment but the service that makes staying in a hotel such a luxury. Many of these catered chalets have spacious living and dining areas as well as comfortable bedrooms. Hallways and vestibules are great for dumping skis and ski gear - much more convenient than having to trust them to a hotel porter.

But these chalets, as the name suggests, have catering too. A breakfast of freshly baked croissants, fresh fruit and yogurt means that mum can relax in bed rather than having to prepare the first meal of the day. Cleaners do the work that many mums might find themselves doing either before the whole family sets off the day or, perhaps, instead of joining them out on the slopes.

Catered chalets offer other meals too. When the family gets back from a day on the slopes there's no need for kids to start raiding the fridge or demanding snacks from their exhausted parents - instead, a delicious afternoon tea with a fresh baked cake will be waiting for them while mum relaxes with a well earned cup of tea or coffee.
