Ever since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in April, several thousands of gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf of Mexico creating one of the worst natural disasters in American history. The oil spill is threatening the Gulf's wildlife, both in the water and on the beaches, as well as energy and the economy, especially those who depend upon clean beaches for their livelihood. Already tar balls have been reported coming onshore along beaches in Gulf States, including Texas. Beach cleanup efforts are already in motion, helping to stave off the impact that most people are dreading. Integrated Protection Systems (IPS) is hard at work doing their part in the oil spill cleanup effort. They are installing HESCO Concertainer Units and adding Enviro-Amour that will encapsulate the oil and transform it into a floating solid so it can be easily removed. Then it can be used as a raw material such as plastic, rubber, fuel or asphalt. This makes beach cleanup a lot easier.
The HESCO units are deployed for use against hurricanes and floods, but are effective for beach cleanup efforts as well. They can be installed quickly, usually within 20 minutes. Also, it takes only two people to complete the job. If you were to use 1,500 sandbags it would take about seven hours and 10 people to do the same job. Time is an important factor with the BP oil spill because oil is already washing up onshore on some of the beaches and the white beach sand is turning into a disgusting, black, oily muck. The faster these units can be installed, the better it will be for beach cleanup. The units have already been installed in Dauphin Island, AL and are successfully combating the oil spill there.
Enviro-Amour solidifies the oil into a reusable raw material. It is a blend of proprietary USDA food grade polymers that are:
Non-toxic
Non-corrosive
Non-carcinogenic
Non-hazardous
It is listed as a solidifier on the Environmental Protection Agency's National Contingency Plan product Schedule as such and can be used on oil spills in navigable waters in the United States. The agent will solidify any hydrocarbon spill into a floating solid that can be disposed of easily and then recycled. Any oil that washes up can be removed with ease during a beach cleanup.
The HESCO units are effective tools in oil spill clean up efforts. IPS can install them at any beach along the Gulf Coast with our preferred installers, Sterling Building Specialist.
