If you're a performer, there are also plenty of locations that offer open mic nights for the more serious musicians or even karaoke for the casual singer who's just out for a fun time. When to travel

Planning a trip to Atlanta?There's never a bad time to go, but the spring and fall months generally offer the most mild weather and the loveliest foliage. In the spring, Atlanta is just like it is pictured in Gone With the Wind, with flowering trees and gardens blossoming. And since the scorching heat doesn't come until mid- to late-summer, spring's more mild temperatures make this a great time of year to visit. The autumn is gorgeous in Atlanta too, especially if you travel outside the city to visit some of the beautiful countryside, which turns gorgeous shades of gold, orange, and brown that time of year. Of course, winter is nice in the city too if your heart's not set on a white Christmas. Summer is hotbut that's why Atlanta's called Hot-lantaif you don't mind the heat, there's plenty to do during the summer and it's also a great time to take a day trip to Tybee Island, which is near Savannah, and cool off by the beach.

Atlanta sports teams

Sports enthusiasts will love the wide variety of athletics offerings in Atlanta. The city is proud of its six professional teams: the Atlanta Falcons, who play football in the Georgia Dome; the Atlanta Braves, who play baseball at Turner Field; the Atlanta Hawks (men's basketball), the Atlanta Dream (women's basketball) and the Atlanta Thrashers (hockey) all play at Philips Arena; and finally, the Atlanta Silverbacks play men's soccer at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The Black College Football Hall of Fame is in Atlanta, and the College Football Hall of Fame will open in the city in 2012. College football fans can check out four-time national champions Georgia Tech, or take a day trip to nearby University of Georgia in Athens. Atlanta hosts Chick-fil-A Bowl, which is played in the Georgia Dome between teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Finally, motor sports enthusiasts will love watching races and other events at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Road Atlanta and the Georgia Dome.
