subject: The Tooth Fairy [print this page] Anyone who knows my daughter or me is aware that Wednesday night is girls night. This is the special day of the week that we really spend quality time together and we end it with watching a movie of her choice. I love watching movies with my daughter and seeing her face light up during those magical moments when she sees something she finds to be extraordinary. Movies can also provide us with topics for conversation or spark her curiosity to learn about new things. This week we agreed on a movie that was a little mature for a five-year-old child but I figured it would have enough silly moments to keep her entertained for a while. We chose The Tooth Fairy.
The Tooth Fairy stars Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, Ashley Judd, Billy Crystal, Julie Andrews and more. This film received many poor reviews but I thought it was fairly enjoyable- certainly more entertaining than Max and Rubys Easter! The fact there was built-in eye candy made the movie more entertaining. Most people would watch a movie starring The Rock for one of three reasons: Women think hes gorgeous, men admire him and children most likely enjoy his tackiness. After having met The Rock on one occasion, I can say I certainly fit into the first category!
One thing that I noticed when reading the reviews is that the critics were not impressed because, as adults, they were not very entertained. If you watch this film for face value, and see it for what it is, a childrens movie, Im sure that you will be entertained. Dont get me wrong, Im a fan of many multi-million dollar films but it doesnt kill me to watch a simple flick every now and then. Sure The Rock overacted a little and was slightly cheesy at times, but that just adds a little extra flavor for the kids.
The Tooth Fairy had a great mix of sports, family, music and fantasy. The film sent a positive message conveying to children that hard work and endurance pay off. It inspires children to believe in themselves and in their imagination and sends a message to parents not to discourage their childrens ideas and dreams. The Tooth Fairy carried many gadgets with him such as a magic wand and disappearing paste and certainly got himself into his share of pickles. It was funny to see someone as big as The Rock in such a dainty and clumsy position. The story around the magic was very believable. The movie maintained a happy medium between fantasy and reality. It was refreshing to see the gender barrier broken as they chose a man to portray a tooth fairy!
Sure, this film was not as popular as, say the Harry Potter films, but it was entertaining. My five-year-old daughter caught on to more than I expected her to and was focused throughout most if the movie. She asked if she can watch it a second time over the weekend and I couldnt argue with her. This film was fun and The Rocks acting does get much better toward the middle of the film. Dont over-think it and you and your family will have a blast watching this adorable flick!
