subject: Compensation For Road Accident [print this page]

A man left paralysed from the neck down in a car crash has been awarded one of the biggest personal injury payouts in the UK.

Lukasz Borowski, 27, of Pontefract, West Yorkshire , was awarded 8.35 million compensation by a judge for his long-term care.

Newcastle High Court heard that Mr Borowski suffered a fractured spine and brain damage when an uninsured driver crashed the car in which he was a passenger into a ditch in November 2005.

The driver, Rozell Sands, was convicted of offences in connection with the crash the following year.

Mr Borowski was a rear-seat passenger in Sands' Peugeot 307 when the crash happened as they travelled to work in Cambridgeshire.

He has been left with permanent loss of movement and sensation below his shoulders and suffers from problems with his memory, attention and concentration as a result of his injuries.

The settlement was calculated to reflect the severe impact the career ending crash had on Mr Borowski's life.

Accident management solicitor, John Davis, said: "Mr Borowski's life was changed forever in an instant as a result of a crash that was not his fault. He will be wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life but cannot move himself and needs help with almost all aspects of daily life - he'll never work again.

"His spinal injury is severe and he has been left with permanent paralysis - he has no effective movements or skin sensation below the shoulders."

The settlement was reached with the Motor Insurer's Bureau, which protects the injured victims of uninsured negligent drivers.
