subject: Cinderella In Desperate Need Of Chanel [print this page]

The Devil Wears Zentai unitardis really a Cinderella story, in spider man costume which a young woman goes from frump to fab by virtue of the usual suspects: hair, makeup, wardrobe and a fairy godmother. The godmother in this tale is a sympathetic fashion editor named Nigel, the adorable Stanley Tucci. Andy Sachs, the harassed young assistant played by Anne Hathaway, starts her first day as slave to Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly dressed in a lumpy blue sweater, awful plaid skirt and chunky black loafers, which the camera makes a point of panning to and lingering over. "Not ugly, not Apple," according to the film's costume designer, Patricia Field. "Who is that sad little creature?" Nigel asks. What New Yorker would even wear such costume zentai zentai suit , let alone to a job at a fashion magazine? The hair gets straight and glossy, acid green eyeshadow is artfully applied. In Paris, she wears fire-engine lipstick - Positive Red by Dior - that should have legions of women lining up for that perfect shade. The parade of fashion includes a glorious Galliano gown of black silk charmeuse, Chanel's couture collection, Valentino, Donna Karan, Bill Blass and, naturally, Zentai unitard . But never mind. Andy needs the job, and at some point, gets suckered into fashion. The catsuits transformation begins when she appeals to Nigel for help, presumably because she's afraid of losing the job.
