Highlights

Total fuel sales through service stations grew by 2% between 2007 and 2008. This increase can be attributed to an increase in diesel consumption of 10% over the same period, due to the increasing number of registered diesel vehicles in Switzerland. Growth in the number of service stations meant that, despite this, sales per station actually fell.

The service station fuel retailing market in Switzerland is relatively concentrated, with over 60% of fuel sold by five fuel retail brands. BP branded sites account for the largest fuel market share at 14%, while Avia has the largest branded network, with 713 sites. As of 1st January 2009, there were over 3,600 service stations in Switzerland.

At 56%, Switzerland has one of the highest penetration of unmanned sites in Europe. Consequently, only 36% of sites feature a shop and 15% have a car wash. Two supermarket players, COOP and Migros (Migrol), have a developed shop offer and also command a strong market share of 13% and 12% respectively.
