By Tom and Gerri, we meet others nearby. Some, we briefly encounter, such as Gerri's depressed patient, Jane (Imelda Staunton), or a friend, Jack (Phil Davis), with one absent, restless woman. Others, we get to know. There's their old friend Ken (Peter Wight), who visits from the North during the summer and masks an unhappy personal life with spacious smoking, drinking and eating, and their son, Joe (Oliver Maltman), a balanced professional who seems sanguine about that single and pops round to see them at home or in their allocation.
Later, during a beautifully filmed, dark winter trip to a funeral in Derby, we meet Ronnie (David Bradley), older brother of Tom, quiet, male survivors, a world away from experience and charisma of his brother or sister.
Each of Tom and Gerry's family and friends shed light on how stable and happy life, Tom and Gerry, and vice versa. She is single and unhappy, with a traumatic romantic history, but tries to hide by mania, wishful thinking, delusions about her age and, again, alcohol. Mary also behaved badly, and one-in with someone close to Tom and Gerrie run tests their patience, allowing Mary to temporarily banish from their warm nest. Finally, this story was getting more ability to learn more about life.
Class consciousness has frequently played a role in Mike Leigh's films, and not only because, as a storyteller whose native terrain is modern Britain, he can hardly hope to avoid it. And sure enough, the observant viewer of his splendidly rich and wise new feature, "Another Year," will notice the shadows that an always-evolving system of social hierarchy casts over the passage of the seasons. ("We're all graduates," one character reminds another, with the prickly pride of belonging to the first generation to receive a university education in an era of expanded opportunity.)
