When to Go

Vacationing in Atlanta? While there's plenty to see year round in Atlanta, some people think the nicest months to fly to Atlanta are the spring or fall. During spring months, Atlanta lives up to Margaret Mitchell's fanciful descriptions from Gone With the Wind, with its pretty blossoming dogwoods and azaleas. In addition, springtime means nice warm weathernot too terribly hot like it can be in July or August. Autumn is the perfect time to take a day trip from Atlanta to view Georgia's lovely fall foliage. Of course, winter is nice in the city too if your heart's not set on a white Christmas. And even though the summers are hot, the city is still jumping with activity and the beaches at Tybee Island near Savannah are only a few hours drive away.

Atlanta sports teams

Sports buffs will feel right at home in Atlanta. The city is proud of its six professional teams: the Atlanta Falcons, who play football in the Georgia Dome; the Atlanta Braves, who play baseball at Turner Field; the Atlanta Hawks (men's basketball), the Atlanta Dream (women's basketball) and the Atlanta Thrashers (hockey) all play at Philips Arena; and finally, the Atlanta Silverbacks play men's soccer at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. The Black College Football Hall of Fame is in Atlanta, and the College Football Hall of Fame will open in the city in 2012. College football fans can check out four-time national champions Georgia Tech, or take a day trip to nearby University of Georgia in Athens. Tickets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl make a great Christmas present. The Bowl is played each year between the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Finally, motor sports enthusiasts will love watching races and other events at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Road Atlanta and the Georgia Dome.

Civil Rights in Atlanta

Atlanta was an important place for the American Civil Rights Movement and is proud of the role the city played in changing history. Spirituality was important to many of the activists and leaders as they fought for equality in America and many of Atlanta's churches offered solace to them, including the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King Sr. and Martin Luther King Jr. served as co-pastors in the 1960s. The King Center, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum and the National Museum of Patriotism are also important stops on a tour of Atlanta's Civil Rights sites. Other related historic sites include Martin Luther King Jr. 's birthplace, Auburn Avenue, as well as his tomb and that of his wife Coretta, which are located at The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change. When planning your Atlanta vacation and booking your Atlanta budget airfare and hotels, be sure to include these important pieces of American history on your agenda.
