Most of the times when you try to convert an iTunes song into another format you will get an error that will say that protected files cannot be converted into other formats. This is because the iTunes tracks that you purchase and download are in a DRM protected AAC or M4P audio format. DRM also known as Digital Rights Management was created by digital media publishers in order to prevent the duplication and dissemination. If you want to download iTunes, the latest version 6.0 can be downloaded from the apple download page. It can be downloaded for both PC and Mac, next you need to run and install it in the usual manner.

1.Launch iTunes

2.Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing

3.Change the Import Using to MP3 Encoder

4.Save the settings and close the panel

5.Go to the library, right-click on a music track and choose the option which reads Convert Selection to MP3.

You will be able to convert the files now provided they are not protected. If they are protected then you will view a pop-up telling you that the protected track cannot be converted to other formats.

How to convert the protected files

1.First burn the files to a compact disc as an audio CD.

2.Next use iTunes to access the audio CD, then add the tracks to the library.

3.Right click the media file to select Convert Selection to MP3.

4.You can use a CD Emulator to simulate a real CD burner instead of burning multiple CD-R discs, f you have a large number of media files that need convertion.

Here is how you can convert MP3 files to iTunes

1.Create a new folder for all the files that need to be converted and save it.

2.Open the iTunes software and navigate to the "File" menu, this will lead you to "Import file", select it and proceed to select the file that needs to be converted.

3.After all your files have been selected, highlight all the MP3 files and click on Advanced tab option at the top of the window.

4.Now you will have two copies of each file, one in an MP3 format and another in AAC format.
