The Micro SD cards can be defined as a format for various flash memory cards. The Micro SD cards can be attached and removed from various devices as and when required. The Micro SD cards usually find common usage in equally common devices such as cell phones and digital cameras. But Micro SD cards can also be used in other devices such as digital audio players and portable media players.

As far as size of Micro SD cards is concerned, the Micro SD cards are about one fourth of the sizes of SD cards. Micro SD cards are probably one of the smallest cards available in the commercial market. Micro SD cards are only as big as a fingernail. There are many devices that are not designed to be able to use Micro SD cards. With advancements in technology, today there are adaptors that allow the Micro card to be used in various devices such as Mini SD, memory Sticks, or USB cards. The Micro SD card may not be universally compatible with all the devices and so the invention of adaptor.

The older name for Micro SD card is TransFlash. The Micro SD cards available in the market by both the names but they are same and they can be used in the devices compatible with any of these two. The card got its new name when the TransFlash was taken over by the SD Association. The only difference between the two cards is that the Micro SD card provides support for SDIO mode as well. This mode enables the non-memory cards such Bluetooth and GPS. When the Micro SD card was launched in the year 2005 by the SDA, it was available in three capacities, that is, 32, 64, and 128 MB. Today, the minimum capacity for the card that is available is 64 MB.
