There is a safe and very cheap alternative for flea control and deworming dogs, cats, and wild animals. It is diatomaceous earth which has 78% silicon dioxide. This product costs about $10 for a 4 lb bag of the powder. I have used this for two years to keep my two cats free of fleas and dewormed. I spread about a quarter teaspoon of the powder on their backs every two to four weeks during the warm months of the year. During the 4 colder months of winter when they are mostly indoors I do not use it at all. Previously I used the expensive and probably harmful vapor chemicals behind their necks and a flea collar every month and they still got fleas occasionally. My cat were very irritated by this chemical flea treatment and would run away whenever I tried to apply it.
The powder will kill fleas in two to three days by mechanical means. The earth is fine grained and quickly damages the exoskeloton of most insects. It is sold as a natural insect control of roaches, ants, earwigs, silverfish and other crawling insects and is sold under the Safer Brand name. I got a bag at Lowe's garden center two years ago and I have 3/4th of it left. I also use it to deworm my cats ocassionally and also the wild racoons and possums in the area. Just mix a teaspoon of the powder in with the dry cat food and set it out for the animals to eat. I have seen large balls of worms thrown up by wild animals the next day. (My tomcat eats mice and birds occasionally and so he needs deworming much more regularly.) This powder can be mixed into wet dog and cat foods also at about 1/16th or 1/8th a teaspoon per cat serving of wet cat food to deworm a cat. I will do this one meal each day for three days to deworm my tomcat and also spike his dry cat food with the powder on those days. But you can also mix 1/8th teaspoon into dry cat food for several days to deworm a dog or cat. Whenever my tomcat seem sickly I suspect worms from eating mice and birds and so use the product for several days.
This powder is very good flea protection for cats when spread around the bedding of wild cats or in the dens of other wild animals. They do not seem to mind it if it is mixed in well with the bedding materials. This natural form of flea and worm control seems far more effective than any commercial chemical brands and is by far less toxic to animals and humans who breathe in the vapors from flea collars and chemicals also.
This product would greatly enhance the quality of life for all domestic dogs and cats as well as all wild feral cat colonies which are plagued by fleas. The product is long lasting and easily applied to cat bedding in the wild.
