Samsung Mobile is a part of the much larger Samsung Group. The name is Korean for three stars. The entire group is currently one of the largest companies in the world and is South Koreas largest chaebol. The mobile division is based in Suwon, South Korea and is formally designated as the telecommunications division. Right now, they are considered as one of the top three mobile phone manufacturers in the world. But that was not always the case. The mobile division faced a lot of challenges and hurdles to get to where it is now. Starting From Scratch Back in the 1980s, the general consensus in Korea was that mobile phones by Motorola were the best. This was a time that the influence of the United States over Asia was very widespread and many associated high-quality as a norm for American businesses. Samsung knew that if they would ever be successful, they had to make people understand that they could produce products that are equal or even better to the ones by Motorola. In order to learn what is so special about Motorola devices, Ki Tae Lee (Wireless division head) ordered 10 Motorola devices for the company to study. While the mobile division has existed since 1977, they had not been successful until before 1990, and even then, the success was small, delivering sales of only about a thousand units. Home Court Advantage During the mid 90s, the Korean company slowly came into terms with the various elements and features that would give them that much needed edge; particularly within their own country. Koreas topography was quite different from that of the US, and while Motorolas devices were good, they were not designed to be used by Koreans. In order to beat the competitor within their own country, the company decided to research heavily on the wave-searching software that was more suitable for Korea. Another driving force behind the mobile divisions efforts was the ultimatum from then-chairman Kun Hee Lee; that the company produce devices that rival that of Motorola or the company would shut down the mobile division permanently. The result came in the form of the SH-700 mobile phone. The device was compact, fully functional, and manufactured at a very high quality rate. The quality testing for the device was so rigid that the company burned phones that failed to meet standards. The devices were all burned in a ceremony that fully invigorated the spirits of the workers with the companys new motto: Quality is Pride. It is said that 188 Million USD worth of rejected devices were burned in the ceremony. Going Global Despite doing well within Korea, the company sought to gain a foothold in the international mobile phone community. This began the change in the design ideologies of the manufacturer to develop more simplified looks for their devices in order to attract European buyers. They also began focusing more on producing high-spec devices instead of low-end phones in order to remove the notion that the Korean company only made cheap devices. Right now, Samsung is one of the top three mobile phone manufacturers in the world and the mobile phone industry is excited to see what their new Bada operating system can do.About the Author:
