The manner in which the GEAC approved Bt brinjal but passed on the responsibility to the government shows that it is not confident about standing behind its own decision. The time has become available after the environment minister's moratorium must be used to strengthen the regulatory regime and put in place systems that secures public interest and earns public's confidence. Anything else would bid farewell for the future of Indian agriculture and safety of its food chain.
