subject: Healthy Eyes [print this page] What would a world be without visionWhat would a world be without vision. We could not drive, read or enjoy the sights. We need to care for our eyes as we age. This article is about healthy aging and vision. See an eye doctor though for medical advice.
I was finding it slightly tougher to see so went online to research eye health. Are there things we can do to strengthen our eyes - just like we exercise to strengthen out muscles.
The eyes are not muscles but they are controlled by muscles. For people with vision loss are not suffering from a lack of muscle. However, when people are tired, sometimes it is the muscles that are letting them down. The symptom of this can be blurry vision.
Repeated movement strengthen the eye muscles. You can practice moving eyes in different patterns. It is all about movement.
Vitamins - especially Beta Carotine (Vitamin A) has long been good for eyes. As the name implies - Beta Carotene is found in carrots. It is also found in other orange vegetable like squash, turnip, yams etc as well as dark green leaf vegetables like spinach, kale and collards.
Eyes benefit from a strong cardiovascular system. So this is one more reason to get some aerobic exercise. Anything from running, cycling, walking, swimming etc. will do.
Eyes love antioxidants. So eat lots of berries, fruits and fresh vegetables. And drink tea (or better yet, Green Tea). And eat whole grains.
Zinc is also an element that supports healthy eyes. Zinc is found in oysters, and to a far lesser degree in most animal proteins, beans, nuts, almonds, whole grains, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
The retina contains Lutein and Zeaxanthin which protect the eyes from damage. The retinal requirement for these doubles from age 20 to age 80. Lutien and Zeaxanthin are found in broccoli, corn, green beans, green peas, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kiwi, spinach, lettuce and a number of other foods.
The bottom line on eyes it seems is just eat well and exercise. The stuff it takes to keep you overall healthy.
