subject: Choosing Layette Clothing For Your First Baby [print this page]

As a first time parent, deciding on layette clothing can be confusing. There are so many options available that it can be downright difficult choose which items you really need! Fortunately, your newborn will receive much of what he or she needs from the baby shower, but you really only need the basics.

Onesies

These are a vital part of your layette clothing. Its important to have quite a few of these on hand so you will be able to replace them when your little one spits up or has a diaper blowout. Keep a couple tucked in your diaper bag at all times, too.

Short sleeved onesies are perfect for hot weather and layering under clothing, while long sleeved onesies can be used on their own for cooler days or under clothes on wintry days.

At this point, get just the basics. You can splurge on cute onesies with sayings on them for the 3-6 month stage, when your baby wont be growing quite as fast. There are so many adorable little outfits, but they will only be used for a few weeks at best.

Pajamas

Baby pajamas come in a couple of types, the gowns or sleep sacks and sleepers which are usually footed one piece pajamas. They come in all weights, so look for the ones appropriate for your weather. Is your baby going to be born in winter? Opt for heavier fabrics. In summer, lightweight sleepers and gowns are much better.

Socks, hats, etc.

Your baby wont be able to keep his or her temperature regulated alone, so invest in some cute little socks that will fit on those tiny feet and keep them warm. A hat is a good way to go, as well. Youll only need a couple at this point, one for warmth and a hat to block the sun.

Layette clothing doesnt need to be complicated. Keep it nice and simple and remember that your cutie will be outgrowing everything at the speed of light anyway!
