Acid Reflux Causes that You Can Avoid

Heartburn or acid reflux is an avoidable disorder. When the stomach is unable to control the production of acid causing it to back up into the esophagus and throat this condition is known as heartburn or acid reflux. Sometimes the condition can be medical related. Usually though the condition known as heartburn is caused by something you've done or something that you do habitually. We will discuss these causes and how to prevent them during the course of this article.

A lot of the time, acid reflux is caused by eating the wrong foods. In these cases, acid reflux is usually called heartburn and is temporary. It is important to look into your food choices if you suffer from heartburn regularly. How spicy is the food you eat? Do you consume lots of chocolate? Do you eat garlic in a lot of your foods? Another food to watch out for is tomatoes as they can also cause heartburn. While these foods are common ingredients, it's not too difficult to avoid them. Dealing with regular heartburn is more painful than having to give up chocolate. Do not forget to eat when you need to. We all, from time to time, find ourselves overscheduled. If this is the case it is easy to forget when we need to eat. Sometimes eating just doesn't fit into the schedule so we wait. This will also cause bouts of heartburn. When you don't eat regularly, the acid in your stomach starts to build up. When the acid gets out of control in this manner your stomach lining will be damages causing your stomach to try to disperse the acid into the esophagus and throat. This is easy to avoid.

In many cases, smoking is the main cause of acid reflux. There are a number of reasons why this is so. Your mucous membranes are harmed by smoking. It damages the reflexes of your throat muscles. Your stomach also produces additional acid when you smoke. It can also cause you to salivate less. When acid enters the back of your throat or mouth, its effects are partly neutralized by saliva. For anyone whose acid reflux is the result of smoking, the cure is simple. If you want to get rid of your problem, just stop smoking. Unfortunately, while this answer is obvious it's not always easy. Remember, though, that if you quit smoking, there are many benefits aside from getting over acid reflux. You may find it helps you in a number of ways, so you'll feel better overall!

You don't have to let acid reflux play a major role in your life. Acid reflux can often be prevented once you know what's causing it to occur. Avoiding heartburn is often a matter of being alert to the choices you make every day and changing a few things. If the problem is caused by a particular type of food, for example, you can avoid this easily enough. While acid reflux is sometimes caused by a certain medical issue, more often it's the result of simple actions that can easily be changed.
