subject: Sell Beats- 3 Things To Avoid [print this page]

In the past I've written plenty of articles about how to sell beats, normally under different pen names than this one. I've helped a tremendous amount of beat makers online learn how to become a music producer and start making money selling beats. It's always been a passion of mine to teach, and so I always try to give the best, most honest information possible. In this article I want to reveal to you 3 of the most common mistakes producers make while trying to sell their beats online.

1. Bad Content. A lot of producers build their websites on Soundclick or MySpace, post their beats up and just hope for sales to fly in. Honestly this isn't going to happen no matter how how many visitors come to your site if your content is not correct. This is easily avoidable, all you have to do is make it easy for your potential clients to buy. Set up a Buy Now button using Pay Pal's free Merchant Tools and write out exactly what each license (leasing and exclusive) is all about. If it's not only easy to understand, but easy to BUY, then you will be making money in no time.

The 2nd most important thing to avoid is making beats that paying rappers don't want. If you're making great music that sounds like filmscore, then you won't be successful selling beats online. The types of beats that fly off the shelves the fastest are sampled beats, hardcore fast tempo beats, R&B beats and club bangers. I know this for a fact, so be sure to FILL your site with those types of instrumentals.

3. Don't make the mistake of gathering information from the wrong sources. I can't tell you how many producers online think they've learned it all when in fact they've simply been hearing the wrong info from the wrong people. If somebody says your beats are hot, it shouldn't mean anything unless they are rappers or producers who sell beats (not just any producer, feel me). Musicians are usually quick to fake their stats, so don't let them convince you they're making money unless you see real proof.

If this information was helpful, raise your hand! Bad joke... Anyway, I hope you learned a lot because these few tips really helped tip the scale for me as a producer.
