subject: The History Of Father's Day [print this page]

Father's Day is celebrated all over the world, on one day or another. But ladies, have you ever wondered how it all began?

We've been doing a little digging at TreatHim and have discovered that it all started with a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd...

After her mother died when she was 16, Sonora was raised by her father William Jackson Smart, a courageous and loving man. She felt that having raised six children alone, he had made huge sacrifices to be a selfless, great dad and therefore wanted him to know just how special he was to her.

The idea first came to her at the age of 27, whilst listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. At first, her idea received a poor reaction, but Sonora stayed strong in her belief and began campaigning for Fathers Day.

She finally put the wheels into motion on the 19th of June, 1910, in Spokane, Washington with the support of Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association. As her father was born in June, this seemed the most appropriate time to hold the First Father's Day celebration.

In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. In 1956 it was recognised by a Joint Resolution of Congress and, by 1972, President Richard Nixon declared Father's Day as the third Sunday of June.

Father's Day stems from the special bond between a father and daughter and still serves today as a way of honouring and saying thanks for everything they do.

So there you have it the story behind Father's Day. Don't forget to check out our selection of gifts for fathers and be sure to bag the perfect present.
