There really is no formal education that one must undergo in order to become a good car sales jobs salesman. The key factor is spirit, an enthusiasm for the product you are selling and an understanding of how your type of customer thinks. In other words, the practice of good salesmanship is more of an art form than an academic ordeal.

What the automotive companies are looking for in their staff is a basic knowledge of how the sales world works. They do expect their employees to have previous experience in sales and retail. Of course, not everyone who has this knowledge carries a degree or a masters in the field.

There are business courses available, however for anyone who is willing to put forth the extra effort and time but an auto salesman has to know more than how to add and subtract. A good salesman has to be able to target the customers he or she is trying to make a sale to. Knowledge of how the general public operates is a good place to start.

An example for this could be something as simple as knowing what kind of cars and trucks are the most popular for the time. Or what model of mid-sized car has the most legroom, the Chevy Impala, or the Ford Taurus?

Auto salesmanship uses a combination of number know-how and mind tactics to get inside the customer's head. In order to do this he must first probe the customer for certain information. They check out the way that he or she is dressed in order to determine their financial status.

They pay close attention to whether or not the customer comes alone or with family. They inquire about the type of job a customer has in order to determine his or her credibility, and use other 'tricks of the trade' as well in order to size up the customer's needs.

Should an entire family stop in, a salesman might try to get on the good side of each family member by releasing certain bits of information about a particular vehicle. For instance, if he or she is trying to sell an SUV to a family of six and they seem interested in purchasing a Subaru Outback then the dealer might try to persuade the adults to choose a different model, like the Nissan Armada because it might be more fuel efficient.

They could also try and side up to the children by mentioning that the Nissan Armada comes with a built-in DVD player. On the other hand, if a younger customer walks in and they are single then a completely different tactic would be used such as trying to sell them a sportier model vehicle to aide their ego. There is no limit to the amount of imagination that can be used when trying to sell someone a car.
