Does it feel as though others around you have a better memory than you? It might not be just your imagination. The fact is that some people really do have a better memory than others. Why is that? What are the factors that are associated with memory? There are definitely several factors that can affect one's ability to have a good memory and understanding those factors can help you to improve your memory.

There are actually several factors that can affect your memory and which can result in the development of a poor memory. One of the primary factors related to memory loss is the aging process. The memory, like many other things related to the body, simply becomes less effective and efficient in our golden years. While there may not be much you can do to turn back the hands of time, making sure that you exercise your brain and eat healthy during your younger years, may help you to stave off memory problems in your older years.

Certain types of medications and drugs can also affect your memory. Alcohol use has also been known to negatively affect memory as well. As we all know, drinking too much can cause temporary memory loss and the inability to recall what happened while drinking. If you consume too much alcohol on a frequent basis, it can result in B12 deficiency which can seriously affect the nervous system and your short-term memory in a permanent manner. Therefore, if you use alcohol, it is important to analyze the frequency that you drink and cut back or completely cut out your alcohol use in order to take advantage of a better memory.

Perhaps one of the most common causes for impairment of one's memory is psychological causes. It is widely believed that both depression as well as anxiety can make it difficult for your memory to function correctly. Needless to say, if you are worried about your memory loss, that can make the problem even worse. Anxiety and depression can be quite serious, leading to a number of problems throughout your life and impacting your social relationships and career. If you experience problems with anxiety or depression, it is imperative that you speak with a mental health professional regarding treatment. Once your anxiety and/or depression are under control, you will likely find that you feel better mentally as well as physically, in addition to the ability to remember better.
