subject: Combating Forgetfulness With Practical Solutions [print this page]

Being forgetful is not that uncommonBeing forgetful is not that uncommon. Many people experience difficulty with this issue. You may forget where you have placed your car keys. Appointments may be missed or you may have difficulty recalling a person's name even just a few moments after you were introduced. All of these are examples of memory problems, sometimes referred to as absentmindedness. Such problems can be frustrating and often embarrassing. There are some practical tips that you can use in order to combat this problem and help you to stay on your toes when it comes to remember everything from where you put your keys to the name of the person you just met.

When it comes to remembering where you place something that you commonly use every day such as your car keys, make sure you always put them in the same place. It can be much more difficult to remember where you place something when you place it in a different place each time. Find a home for that item, return it to its home and you will likely find that this is no longer a problem.

Another common problem is trying to remember where you parked your vehicle. This can be particularly problematic in large parking lots. It can even make you feel as though you are going senile when you emerge from a building or store and realize you can't find your own vehicle! To solve this problem, try to always park in the same place. For example, park somewhere in the first or second row located to the right of the entrance. When you do this enough times, it will establish a pattern and make it easier for you to find your vehicle.

When it comes to recalling someone's name, try to jot it down as soon as you hear it in order to remember it more easily. Studies have routinely shown that when you write down new information it helps you to better preserve the information in your mind. So, the next time you are dining out or you are at an event and you meet someone new, make a point to write down their name, even if you must do it on a cocktail napkin. You may just be surprised at how much easier it is to recall the information later.

If you are affectionately known as the absentminded professor in your circle of friends and family, practicing these tips may be just what you need to make sure that you remember important as well as mundane details.
