subject: Patients Should Inform Themselves On The Procedures And Surgeons Available For Liposuction [print this page]

Liposuction procedures require the patient's full understanding of what occurs in order to extract fat from the body. They should also seek a thorough understanding of what to expect during and after the surgery. The patient should have a good relationship with the surgeon. Know the surgeons experience and records. Feel comfortable asking lots of questions.

With standard liposuction, tools are used to first loosen and then suck the fatty cells out of the body. The loosening process is usually what takes the body a while to recover from. The pressure used is different for men and women. But the recovery is usually about the same time.

The standard procedures are done with the use of a surgical tool called a cannula. An incision is made in the fatty area and the cannula is placed in the incision. The surgeon uses an enormous amount of pressure to loosen the fatty areas of the body in order to make it possible for the extraction of the fatty cells. This technique can cause a lot of bruising and soreness to the patient, adding a lot of time to the healing process. It can take weeks or months in order to fully recover.

A special laser is used, in laser liposuction to melt the fatty cells inside the body. The laser replaces the need to loosening the fat with a tool. That means it also reduces the pain and bruising of the body. Which in turn cuts down on the amount of healing needed after the procedure.

Laser liposuction has been dubbed Smart Lipo or sometimes called "lunch time lipo." These nicknames stem from the simpler process of the procedure compared to the standard surgical conditions. Most of the time patients are able to have laser liposuction and then return to normal activities the next day.

The laser only requires the use of a local anesthetic as apposed to a general anesthetic. Local anesthesia combined with the less invasive procedure cuts down on the costs of liposuction. A local anesthetic does not put the patient completely out and there for they are able to recover quicker.

Local anesthesia is less expensive which makes it easier for the surgeon to create an out patient situation. With laser work there is less swelling, bruising, and scaring do to the small incisions made and the laser abilities. The out patient opportunity helps save time and money for both the patient and the doctor.

While standard procedures require more pressure and soreness they are still productive and have been preformed on many patients with excellent results. It is important that each patient talk with their surgeons and personal doctors about the risks and potential out comes their individual body and situation should expect from a liposuction procedure of any kind.
