subject: Before You Store: Item Checklist For Moving Or Storage [print this page]

When its time to pack your things for storage, there are a few key items that you should have prior to starting to help keep your belongings safe and make things easier. Some of these things include:

Packaging tape Those boxes aren't going to keep themselves closed, make sure to have quality packaging tape to seal your boxes after they are filled.

Bubble wrap This will keep your fragile items such as glass or ceramics safe during the move when the boxes inevitably get bumped around during transport.

Mattress Covers If you plan on sleeping on that mattress again, chances are you dont want dust particles and other airborne allergens settling on it. Mattress covers will protect your mattress and keep it ready for use.

Masking Tape If you happen to be packing mirrors or glass picture frames, put an X of masking tape on them. This will prevent shattering should they break and make clean up safer and easier.

Fat-tip permanent marker Labeling boxes is important, not only for you, but for anyone else who will be helping you move. Write legibly and be sure to label boxes containing fragile items accordingly.

Sturdy boxes Use strong, sturdy boxes to pack your things. Using old, worn boxes could result in the box tearing during your move and the contents inside getting damaged.

Padlocks Once your items are in storage, that's where you want them to stay until you are ready to retrieve them. Padlocks are a must in keeping your stored belongings safe.

Handcart For larger items like furniture, a handcart will make moving these heavier things a whole lot easier, especially if you don't have another person there to help.

Dish/Glass pack kits These kits create dividers within boxes for safely storing your fragile tableware. While not a necessity, these certainly do make storing your dishes easier and safer.

If you happen to forget any of the items mentioned, not to worry, you can pick them up at the supply center that most self storage facilities have located right on-site.
